We couldn’t wait to kick off 2017 with our latest of oven of the month- it really is a stunner!
Adrian Green’s Mezzo 76 oven is our deserving January winner- we simply fell in love with his fantastic outdoor set-up. Not only has his garden area been beautifully and carefully designed, he’s also shown that you do not need a big garden to have a pizza oven- you simply need to make the most of the space you’ve got! There’s no stopping Adrian and his wife Elizabeth, they’ve already got a whole host of recipes under their belt- just check out those mouth-watering dishes they’ve been cooking.

Our Stone Bake Oven Journey
“My wife Elizabeth, and I, having dabbled in the art of wood fired ovens in the form of a small, metal portable version, decided we really wanted to take this outdoor cooking experience to the next level. After much online research, we were enticed by the Mezzo 76 from the Stone Bake Oven Company and could not be happier with it!
As it was summertime and we were eager to use it “straight out of the box”, we ordered the oven plus it’s metal stand which allowed us to site the oven immediately without the need for any complex building in. Communications from the Stone Bake team prior to delivery were first rate, letting us know exactly what to expect and when to expect it. Packaging of the oven components was extremely good for its long road journey north and everything arrived safe and sound, exactly as planned.
The metal stand and base sections took no time at all for two people to assemble, and once we’d watched the handy video online and mustered two or three friends to help us lift the dome into place, we were ready to cook..
And cook, we did! A family pizza party was held that same night, with the results far-exceeding anything we had produced so far. In an instant, the oven become the centerpiece of all our summer outdoor entertaining. Most weekends saw us firing up, but experimenting not just with different pizza recipes, but also really testing the Mezzo 76 to its limits. Anything that can be cooked in a conventional oven can be cooked (even better) in a wood fired oven (with a little practice). Our non-pizza menus have so far included:
- – Bistecca Fiorentina
- – Roast beef with roast potatoes and roasted vegetables
- – Slow cooked curry
- – BBQ belly pork and homemade Boston baked beans
- – Fruit crumble
- – Homemade bread
and the list is still growing with each week that passes.
We were so impressed with our oven and what other Stone Bake owners had created with theirs, that by Autumn, we had decided to transform our modest-sized garden and place the Mezzo 76 at the very heart of all that we do there. Here again, the Stone Bake team were extremely helpful. With us having no prior building experience, they very kindly supplied us with in-depth generic plans to build a suitable brick structure to incorporate our oven into. Local builder James Green (Homecare Property Services – find him on Facebook) then worked his construction magic, not only creating our fabulous oven complete with utensil table, but laying a wonderful, decorative seating area in front of it to really enhance our outdoor entertaining.
Bonfire Night 2016 saw the inaugural firing of our newly erected project. Not only did it produce some gorgeous bonfire party food, it also supplied heat, light and a focus for the guests once the fireworks had finished.
The Spring will see us complete this project, when we plan to insulate the dome to allow us to really get to grips with slow cooking etc.
All in all, the Mezzo 76 is a fabulous product, backed up by a great team that is Stone Bake Oven. Our Journey this year just shows you that wood ovens are not just for those with huge gardens – they can easily be enjoyed in smaller areas just as well.
