Featured Oven- Emma’s Mezzo 76

To celebrate some of the fantastic wood fired ovens we have seen installed over the years, we will be running a new feature. This will showcase the potential each oven has and the measures that you can take to create a bespoke design that suits your needs and tastes.

“It’s amazing what you can do with an idea you’re passionate about and lots of determination

First up, we have Emma who documented her oven journey on Instagram ( @our_little_home2home_reno ). An important element of the kitchen redevelopment was installing a wood fired oven. She opted for the Mezzo 76 with an Insulation Kit, Render Kit and a Twin Walled Flue System (essential for indoor installations).

Emma’s goal was a “modern country” design which she achieved through a fusion of modern elements – pop art, wall mounted text, engineered wood, render and skylights – as well as country notes – rustic bricks, stable doors and velvet seats.

Emma’s Mezzo 76 Oven

Focusing on the oven area, Emma has created a hearth at the front of the oven using macrame pumice cross stitch tiles which she got from Topps Tiles. These were put around the perimeter of the oven, with the Mezzo 76 embedded with calcium silicate board underneath so it is flush with the tiles. These tiles are also laid on the floor in front of the oven to create a work area away from the rooms engineered wood flooring.

What makes Emma’s worktop extra special is that, when not in use, it also functions as a mantelpiece. We love how she keeps her display seasonal – most recently she created an Easter scene that showcased the oven beautifully.

Regarding the process of construction, Emma says “Be brave with your pizza oven! We never thought we’d be able to get one built inside the kitchen (we already have one in the garden), but it’s amazing what you can do with an idea you’re passionate about and lots of determination. Plus it helps to have an amazing team of builders and experts to bring it to life!“

Emma’s team of builders built a brick cube base, with a space for wood storage. The oven was integrated into the design of the house, using neutral toned bricks that match the wall. This draws attention to the brighter elements dotted around the room – such as the wall art, the seasonal produce on the worktop and the flame of her Mezzo 76 Oven!

The insulation and render keeps the oven hot for longer. This allows them to save fuel by cooking with the residual heat – fully utilising the excellent heat retention of a rendered oven. Emma has been able to produce some excellent overnight stews, as well as many other great meals.

“We absolutely love exploring with new foods in it, particularly utilising all of the residual heat after we’ve cooked our pizzas. We’ve slow roasted meats, roasted vegetables to make pasta sauces, made overnight stews! We’re looking forward to trying more as time goes on.”

Remember everyone, it’s more than a Pizza Oven!

She brightens up the area by having a piece of vibrant art on the wall. She alternates between different pieces, but are both courtesy of Art By Inuka (@artbyinuka). There is also some playful wall writing seen above the doorway that states “In this kitchen we eat pizza and dance”.

However, Emma uses more than art to brighten up her kitchen space. The room also features a skylight, allowing for sunlight to stream into the room beautifully.

Through this skylight, you can also see the top of her Twin Walled Flue System. This system has a lining of insulation which stops the heat emitting out the pipe like it would through a traditional flue. This allows for a safe passage of the smoke out of the building and the pipe will not be hot to touch so can come into contact with your building materials.

Emma advises: “If you are thinking of building an indoor pizza oven you do need to think carefully about its location. Consider the route your flue will take (particularly in relation to your neighbours houses) and get a flue specialist in to plan it before you start your oven development.”

A simple 1.5m twin walled system is available on our website, but if you wish to have a more complex system is is always worth speaking to HETAS. They are an organisation which can be used to find a flue installer who will be able to meet your requirements in terms of directing the smoke with an appropriate level of drag.

“Think about air outlets, or keeping your oven child-safe (if that’s something you need to consider). You’ll need heat resistant tiles for your surrounding area. Then of course it will have to be signed off by building regs! There’s lots to think about, but it will be worth the effort.”

Emma ensured her indoor installation adhered to building regs by using a HETAS qualified flue installer. The oven uses calcium silicate board under it to help keep the heat within the oven and not conduct through to building materials. The oven is finished with our off-white render mix and a solid cast archway.

The Calcium silicate board, insulation body soluble fibre blanket and decorative archway are all part of the insulation kit – available as part of an oven kit, or can be purchased separately by those who decide to insulate and/or render their oven at a later date.

Special thanks to Emma for choosing The Stone Bake Oven Company and for showcasing the Mezzo 76 in your wonderful, stylish home!

Thanks for reading the first of our new ‘Featured Oven’ series – we hope this feature will provide our customers (both old and new) with inspiration when it comes to designing their own wood fired cooking space.

November Oven of the Month- Tony & Katy Willis

A customer photograph of an insulated and rendered primo 60 oven in an outdoor space

Hi Stone Bakers! Welcome to November’s oven of the month, our winners this month are Tony and Katy Willis and their Primo 60 kit!

Tony and Katy have achieved such an elegant look with their entire garden redesign. We love the white rendered dome finish of their oven which ties in perfectly with the modern Mediterranean style of their outdoor space. Their colour changing lights also ensure that they are ready for a pizza party whatever time of day!

Here’s what Tony had to say:

I’ve been making homemade sourdough pizza for about 7 years and these have been gradually getting more refined over the years and have been a feature of my daughters’ birthdays parties and a core part of our weekly family night since then. We’d talked about maybe one day getting a wood fired oven after we retire, but when the decking in our courtyard back garden became rotten and needed replacing, we decided that this could be an opportunity to make that dream a reality a bit sooner. We had some fairly clear design ideas that developed over a few weeks from looking at Pinterest and landscape gardening websites – white walls, raised planters, wooden bench, and adaptable lighting.

We’ve loved cooking with the oven so far – pizzas, chicken, roast vegetables, merguez burgers, chicken tikka, naans all taste fantastic and retain their juiciness because of the high temperature of cooking while taking on a wonderful smoky aroma.

Before the work was done in the garden, we were out there just a few times a year, but since it was completed we’ve eaten outside nearly every day – breakfast, lunch and dinner where possible. The oven makes a great focal point and is producing some fantastic food.

June Oven of the Month- Simon and Wendy Kinzel

A customer photograph of an insulated and rendered Mezzo 76 in an outdoor cooking space

Welcome to June’s Oven of the month. Our winners this month are Simon and Wendy Kinzel! We simply fell in love with their amazing outdoor setup, with one of our Mezzo 76 kit ovens taking centre stage! Opting for a striking colour scheme, the white render dome finish really stands out, looking authentic, yet modern. The Kinzels also made fantastic use of the crate their oven arrived in, using it to make the shelves and doors of the outdoor kitchen area. A stunning but eco friendly build!

Here’s what the Kinzels had to say about their oven:

“Our new garden was designed around the new Mezzo 76 kit, and it now takes pride of place.

When we received the kit it was a little daunting but with a bit of hard work and perseverance, it can be built with a little DIY skill. We used every plank of wood from the pallet that the oven was delivered in, to make the doors and shelves for the cupboard, total recycling, even down to the screws.

The pizzas are without doubt the best we have ever tasted, home made pizza dough (Jamie Oliver) and fresh toppings, and so easy to cook to perfection.

We loved our garden before but now we are out there whenever the sun shines, or even if the rain falls.

Thank you so much for a great product and instructions that were easy to follow.”

If you would like to be in with a chance of winning Oven of the Month, simply send in photos of your oven and some feedback. Whether you purchased your oven a while ago or are a new customer, we would love to hear from you! Send in your photos to info@stoneovenco.co.uk.

Oven of the Month- James Douglas- Mezzo 76

A customer photograph of an insulated and render mezzo 76 on a brick base with a slate top

Spring is finally here and we’re so excited to announce that James Douglas’s Mezzo 76 Kit has won our March oven of the month. We fell in love with his glorious garden featuring a very sleek and modern Mezzo pizza oven. Not only does the oven bring his whole family together for some epic pizza sessions, but it’s also the centrepiece of their outdoor space. We just love the white render dome finish against the authentic brick hearth- it adds character and provides an authentic feel against the green backdrop.

Here’s what James had to say about his oven:

“I would highly recommend the Stone Bake Oven Company! The team were very responsive and knowledgeable. The oven arrived well packed and I had a lot of fun building the oven. The instructions were very easy to follow- honestly, I hadn’t laid a brick before in my life, so it was fun doing this and I was pleased with the outcome! Hopefully it is still standing up next year!

We’ve used the oven almost every night last year, it’s very easy to use and cooks about anything, for a family of 4 this oven size is perfect! It’s a great social area and the kids’ love getting involved and topping there own pizzas!

Overall, it’s a fantastic, well made product and a great place for the family to have some fun, and you can’t put a price on that!”

February Oven of the Month- Wayne Connolly’s Vento 100

A customer photograph of a stone bake company Vento 100 wood fired oven. It has been insulated and rendered and placed in an outdoor cooking area.

Our February oven of the month is a real beauty and illustrates how our wood fired ovens can make a fantastic centerpieces in any garden space. Wayne Connolly’s Vento 100 is this months winner- we just adore his outdoor eating area and think his Vento makes it special and unique. The design of his stand is authentic and the mosaic worktop provides a stylish yet rustic finish. Here’s what Wayne had to say about his oven:

“The oven is fantastic, we chose a large oven as we have 6 children between us, and Sunday lunch and pizzas are a big affair- especially when we invite other families too.

We moved into a converted 16th century home last April in Cheshire, and I have always wanted a setting for an outside cooking space and wood fired oven, and chose The Stone Bake Oven Company due to its reviews and clearly superior built ovens.

The oven was easy to install (with some help) and getting started couldn’t be easier!

We cook everything in it from a Sunday roast, to pizzas, casseroles, bread and even a suckling pig – although the suckling pig was more like a “big brother” that just fitted.

We use the oven all year round, we had it insulated so we can have 10 hour slow cooked food, and it’s a treat.”

September Oven of the Month – Tim Joslyn

An insulated and rendered Mezzo 76 in an outdoor cooking space. It sits on a square brickwork base.

2016-07-29-21-05-10

It’s time for another oven of the month and it’s the turn of Tim Joslyn’s Mezzo 76 Kit. We just adore his outdoor eating space which is complete with an outdoor fridge, barbecue and of course his wood fired oven. Even his dog is a fan of the build! He’s also been creating some fantastic pizzas, bread, meringue and much more!

Here’s what Tim had to say…

Since the oven has been installed (and the kit gave our builders an easy job) we’ve noticed a lot more people ‘passing through’ our house at mealtimes. Cooking for large groups is a doddle with lunch for 25 completed recently with little to no advance preparation.

Each time we fire it up, the pizzas are just the start of the cooking journey. A typical routine might be pizzas on Saturday night, use the residual heat to slow cook meat on through Sunday day, chuck in a log late afternoon to cook the potatoes and vegetables and still have enough heat on Monday morning to make meringue!”

Here at Stone Bake HQ there’s nothing more we love than seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their oven.

January Oven of the Month- David Pavesi

A Mezzo 76 that has been insulated and then decorated with a grey and white pebble design. It also features a black angles flue and a wooden door. It is sitting on a brick base with a black slate top.

David Pavesi’s Mezzo 76

It’s our very first Oven of the Month for 2016 and our January winner is a real beauty! We fell in love with David Pavesi’s Mezzo 76 Kit and his unique pebble design covering the dome- it’s a one of a kind for sure!! He’s also been sending us over some seriously scrumptious pizza photos- just look at that epic breakfast pizza. Food envy or what? Thanks for sharing your photos with us David!

Here’s what David had to say:

Well that’s nice news in these rather cold and bleak days! Fame at last! However poor the weather was preceding friends coming around for pizza, the actual day’s weather always turned out to be splendid – I hope the talisman continues to work this year. Our experiments to date have not gone much beyond pizza as everyone coming around for the first time is only interested in one thing- which meant pizza two or three times a week on some occasions. A wood fired oven cookbook for Christmas will no doubt expand our repertoire!

With the insulation pack, render and top decorative covering, the heat retention is so good that on a number of occasions we have put a stew or casserole in at midnight for slow cooking until the morning. When that was out we filled it with the wood for the next occasion so that it was super dry.

I would also like to say that the instructions for building the base were very good and we only adjusted for personal design, together with a couple of YouTube videos on bricklaying. We’ve ended up with a great talking point and a product which will give great pleasure for many years to come.”

There is nothing we love more at Stone Bake HQ than seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their ovens.

Daryl Mackay’s Mezzo 76

Can you believe that it is the end of the year already and our final oven of the month for 2015? Daryl Mackay’s Mezzo 76 is our fantastic December winner. We fell in love with his modern outdoor kitchen area with those awesome hanging lanterns. We bet they create such a cosy atmosphere when hosting a late night pizza party. Daryl has also been wowing us with some truly yummy looking pizza photos- they are making us SO hungry! A worthy winner for sure!

Here’s what Daryl had to say…

“Thank you- that’s really good news. We are planning to use the oven this weekend to test out some Christmas pizzas using traditional Christmas ingredients.

We used to have the Primo 60 at our previous home and it was such a success we decided to go for it and do it properly this time. One decision we had to make was the surrounding work surface and we’re so pleased we went for granite as it is easy to clean and really tough.

We’ve already had some fantastic pizzas with the whole family. We continue to receive compliments for our pizzas. It did take a few attempts to perfect but now…”

There is nothing more we love here at Stone Bake HQ than seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their ovens.

November Oven of the Month

A customer photograph of an insulated and rendered Primo 60 in an outdoor space, under a veranda

20150709_153147

It’s oven of the month time already, and this month we’ve got a real cracker! Paul Ray’s Primo 60 definitely stood out and is our deserving November winner. We fell in love with his gorgeous outdoor eating space amongst lots of lovely greenery. Paul’s attention to detail also caught our eye – just look at those awesome DIY Mason jar lights! Fantastic!

Thanks for sharing your photos with us Paul!

Here’s what Paul had to say..

I have taken a selection from the day we received the oven, to building it’s final resting place, insulating it and at last…cooking!

We have really enjoyed the variety of meals we have cooked for ourselves, family and friends and our ‘pizza nights’ are always fully booked, with everyone wanting a go with the oven.

We have cooked chickens, chilli, stuffed peppers, steaks, roasted veg and of course, a multitude of pizzas and fab garlic breads. As we are under cover, we cook day and night, wet or dry and usually finish the evening around the fire with a glass of wine or two!”

If there is one thing we love here at Stone Bake HQ, it’s seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their ovens.
