April 18′ Oven of the Month – Neale Harrison

Welcome to April’s oven of the month. Congratulations to our winner’s Neale and Julie Harrison and their impressive Mezzo 76 Kit.

Here’s what Neale and Julie wanted to share with you:

Our appreciation of great pizza really started when we moved to a small town near Venice for a 2.5 year work secondment. It soon became apparent that not all pizzas were the same and consequently we started to only eat in pizzerias with a wood fired oven. In Italy that wasn’t a restriction as it’s fairly common to find wood fired ovens but on returning to the UK we found it increasingly difficult to get pizza cooked how we like it – with a nice crispy base! We had considered bringing back an oven from Italy but it ended up not being practical. A quick google search when we were back in the UK revealed that the Stone Bake Oven Company was the ideal place to buy a kit and very soon after, it was sitting in a wooden crate on the drive. This was November and we gave ourselves until March to research how it should look and what type of structure we would build.

Despite having no brick laying skills at all we decided that a brick structure would look best in our garden next to our summer house, especially as we had kept the roof felt and paint so we could match them up! Two more decisions to make – the bricks and whether to include a storage area for the wood underneath. After many nights of searching on the internet for bricks that would be easy to lay and look different in the end we went for bricks cut from Yorkshire stone from a local quarry – not the cheapest way to do it but now having completed the build we are really pleased with how it looks.

Now to the wood storage area which most ovens have within their design. We decided fairly early on that the compressed wood material sold by the Stone Bake Oven Company would be the fuel we would use, we decided to design the base without a storage area and keep the wood in the summer house instead.

Most of the design is based on the plans on the website so this is an excellent place to start. The upper section and the roof were more our design to match up with the summer house but we are really pleased with the final result.

So after all of this have we been pleased with what we have cooked – absolutely! Pizzas are fantastic and so quick to cook, we’ve also experimented with cooking pulled pork over a Saturday night to be ready for Sunday lunch and a slow roasted leg of lamb. Whilst we love our BBQ’s it does seem extra special to invite friends and family over for pizza!”

Neale has kindly shared some images with us going through each stage of his build!

March 18′ Oven of the Month – Jason Rigby

Welcome to March’s oven of the month. Congratulations to Jason and the Rigby family who have won this month with their Mezzo 76.

Jason has opted for an elaborate brick dome and stand under a covered area in their garden. As you can see the flue has been directed to go up and out of the roof, if you are interested in achieving this look then please take a look at our blog post all about flue adaption here.

Jason has incorporated a storage area underneath the oven and plenty of worktop space to the side in order to create the perfect cooking environment, rain or shine!

Here’s what the Rigby family had to say:

“We wanted to be able to use our oven in March through to October so we decided to build our Stone Bake oven under a new covered area on our terrace. We’ve had loads of fun and the kids love cooking, especially pizza’s! We have had lots of parties with friends and family all getting involved. Dad even cooked the Sunday roast!!”

February 18′ Oven of the Month – Neil & Jo Whitehurst

Welcome to February’s oven of the month, congratulations to Neil & Jo Whitehurst for their amazing Mezzo 76 kit!

Neil and Jo opted for a classic white render dome, but have teamed it with a complex brick stand design and created an incredible outdoor kitchen!

Read what they had to say about their experience here:

“When we were looking at which oven to buy, the Stone Bake website was very important in our decision to go with a Stone Bake pizza oven. We had looked at a number of ovens of differing costs and quality. The level of skills required to build some of these ovens was also a factor in our decision.

We had employed a local landscape gardener to build our new patio. He was very good at standard patios but had never built a pizza oven base before, he was happy to try something new. The website with its detailed manuals and previous customer’s photos helped us choose the Mezzo76 as the perfect oven for us. This decision was made easy because we were confident that, of all the ovens on sale, this one would be the right size, easy to install and wouldn’t be too expensive.

We were concerned about the weight of the oven, a friend at work had taken delivery of a pizza oven that came in one piece and had problems getting it in to situ in their garden. Looking at the videos on your web site reassured us that the oven could be carried in pieces by a few able people from the garage to the back garden. I have included some pictures of the oven being built because we also found these photos posted by other people invaluable help in our process.

When the day came to put the oven in place, it took 3 people to put the top on the oven in a few minutes. As soon as the top was on and we stood back to admire our new oven and, Molly the cat decided it was her new home! We kept the oven in its natural state for a few months because we were going to render it ourselves, but, couldn’t pluck up the courage! In the end, we did chicken out and a more able friend rendered the oven after we insulated it and put the chicken wire round it.

We are so pleased with our new oven and have cooked many things in it, breads, pizzas, both shop bought and homemade, chickens, lamb, prawns and T-bone steak, to name just a few. Our friends love our new garden and oven and we seem to get more people popping round for dinner time these days!

A big thank you to you and your team for the guidance which you make readily available. We are thrilled with our new patio and it wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance we found at the Stone Bake Oven Company.”

A big thank you to Neil and Jo for such wonderful comments, we hope you keep enjoying your oven for many years to come!

August Oven of the Month- John Horvath

Welcome to August’s oven of the month, our winner this month is John Horvath!

John opted for a clean-cut brick cube finish, and he pulled it off brilliantly! Not only is the oven in an ample location in the garden, John has extended the build even further to make plenty of worktop space ready for cooking and lots of storage for his wood. This really is the perfect setting and in such a beautiful location.

Here’s what John had to say about his oven:

“Having spent much time abroad, I enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle and often saw outdoor ovens being the centre of that entertainment, I knew it was the way forward for me! After Googling companies that offered wood fired ovens, your company came up with excellent reviews.

I’m delighted with my oven, as I love the taste it gives to the food and pizzas, which you can’t get from a conventional oven. It has also become a great focal point for when I have friends over for dinner. Friends can’t wait to come back for the unique taste of pizza from a wood fired oven.”

July Oven of the Month- Mark Rice

Welcome to July’s oven of the month, our winner this month is Mark Rice!

We love his elegant brick dome finish, it is clear that a lot of time and effort was put into getting this build exactly right! The stand has a unique design with perfect storage underneath for plenty of wood and Mark has even put his own personal touch on the flue. The oven is a big hit with all the family and Mark even thinks the oven has changed his lifestyle!

Here’s what Mark has to say about his oven:

“After much research online, I liked the look of the Primo and the fact it came in 3 easy to assemble parts, made it easier for me to handle and lift onto the plinth. Another factor for choosing The Stone Bake Oven Company was that the team were at hand to answer and give advice when I called, unlike other brands that you had to email and they never responded!

I really enjoy outdoor cooking, that is partly the reason for wanting a wood-fired oven. I also knew that the expense of having the oven built into a dome would add value to my property (well that’s what I told my wife!!). Another reason for my desire of wanting a wood fired oven, is that my wife is Portuguese and in her village back home they have a communal oven to bake breads and it smells truly wonderful and has such a charm about it.

The Primo is such a wonderful conversation starter and makes entertaining a bit special, not to mention that the cooking results are superb. It really has changed my lifestyle, as I can never eat a mass produced plastic tasting delivered pizza again! Plus, my two boys love my pizzas more than anything else in the world, which makes me super Dad! ”

May Oven of the Month- Andrew and Sarah Bryce

Welcome to another fantastic oven of the month! Our May winner is Andrew Bryce’s Mezzo 76 kit that’s been built into an authentic brick cube enclosure. After using and loving their own Mezzo 76 Go oven at home, Andrew and Sarah knew it would be a great investment for their holiday barn let, The Suffolk Escape.

Here at Stone Bake HQ we we’re in awe at how eye-catching the oven looked against the glorious countryside backdrop. Even better it’s taking pride of place as the main feature of the garden area which guests are able to use and enjoy during their stay. Here’s what Andrew and Sarah had to say about their oven.

“We love our Mezzo 76 and use it at least once a week for pizza parties and are gradually mastering more creative uses. We’ve slow cooked a delicious lamb shoulder and next we’re going to try and master grilling steaks “dirty” style on the embers.

We’ve had so much enjoyment from our pizza oven it was a must for our new barn conversion holiday let project.  The guests so far have loved trying it and were surprised how easy it is make amazing pizzas!”

Here are just a few awesome comments from Andrew’s guests who have tried out the pizza oven during their stay!

“The great addition was the pizza oven. We fed 12 one evening and it was a great ‘activity’ with all involved, all the accouterments made this evening a great success. Great oven and addition to the barn.”

“The Pizza Oven was relatively straight forward to use and everything was at hand to create the perfect wood fired crust. An ideal center point for a family or party event.”

“Friday night using the pizza oven was great fun. One of us had prepared the dough and the evening was spent experimenting with lots of different topping combinations. My son who does not eat cheese had never eaten pizza before. Because he could leave the cheese off he is now a pizza loving convert. The oven was such a hit my youngest daughter and son in law have now bought and installed one in their own garden.”

August Oven of the Month – Steve Constantine

image004It’s time for another oven of the month and Steve Constantine’s beautiful Vento 100 oven is August’s worthy winner. We absolutely love his authentic brick hearth and dome design- it really is the centrepiece of his outdoor eating space. He’s used a stone tiled top around his oven and on the surrounding work surfaces, giving a sleek modern twist to his oven design.  Thanks for sharing with us Steve!

Here’s what Steve had to say…
We have always loved outdoor cooking and would often collect driftwood for BBQ’s and use a tripod and Dutch oven suspended over an open fire in the garden. Holidays to Cyprus introduced us to outdoor wood fired ovens and the wonderful flavours they produce.

We researched a number of outdoor ovens and companies on the market and settled on Stone Bake as the best. The ovens are top quality and the knowledge and support from all the staff at Stone Bake is second to none. Installation was carried out by our two friendly builders in a matter of a few weeks making use of the plans on the website. I must admit to not being able to wait to use the oven and we were already roasting and baking in the oven before completion of the overall build.

We have used our oven for roast meats, vegetables, a wonderful lamb Kurzi, lasagne, rhubarb crumble, slow roast belly of pork, pizzas and breads. We are still learning and experimenting with recipes and having a wonderful time doing so.”

We love nothing more at Stone Bake HQ than seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their oven.

June Oven of the Month- Mike and Pat Smith

IMG_0038 Mike and Pat Smith have been fantastic customers of ours for well over two years now; they are always sending us through fantastic oven pictures and delicious recipes that we can share with everyone. Here at Stone Bake HQ, we thought that it was finally time that their beautiful Mezzo oven took its rightful spot as our June Oven of the Month. We’ve always admired Mike and Pat’s brick outdoor kitchen. Not only is it wonderfully authentic but together they have created the perfect entertaining space. Thank you Mr and Mrs Smith!

Here’s what Mike and Pat had to say:

“Many thanks for your e-mail, picking our oven as “oven of the month”.

Since having the oven it has changed the way we eat. Now throughout the spring, summer and autumn months we cook in the wood oven as often as we can, weather permitting. It has certainly taught me a lot about cooking. With the wood oven it’s not an exact science. You can’t set it at 220 degrees for an hour and then turn it down to 180 degrees for 10 minutes. It makes you much more aware of the different cooking stages and techniques, watching and testing on a regular basis.

We have now learnt how to adapt most recipes to work in the wood oven. The photos attached include many dishes cooked in the oven. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the oven.

There is nothing we love more at Stone Bake HQ than seeing our customers using and most importantly enjoying their ovens.

May Oven of the Month- Dave Spencer

image1

It’s already time for another oven of the month and May’s winner is Dave Spencer’s delightful Mezzo 76 oven. His fantastic garden transformation really caught our eye and we fell in love with the authentic brickwork enclosing the oven. He’s definitely created an inviting, sleek outdoor garden space that is the perfect setting for a wood fired oven evening with friends and family or a lunchtime pizza party. Thank you for sharing with us Dave!

Here’s what Dave had to say…
“That’s brilliant thanks! I wasn’t expecting anything like that. The decking was done by a professional but the oven is all my own work. Never done brickwork in my life but just followed the manual instructions for the base and looked at photos on your site to guess building the dome shape. It took a while as could only work on it at weekends but well worth the effort.

The oven itself is a piece of cake to use and easy to clean. Roasts lamb brilliantly and going to do a whole suckling pig in summer.”

April Oven of the Month- Craig and Sarah Barber

image1 3 image2 3image1 2

It’s April oven of the month time already Stone Bakers! This month we chose Craig Barber’s Vento 100 as our winner! His brick design really caught our eye- not only is it impeccably finished but the design concept is unique yet authentic. What’s more is that Craig did all the building work himself and what a mighty fine job he did!

Here’s what Craig had to say:

“Thanks for choosing our oven!!

After scouring the Internet for months, I decided to invest in the Vento 100 oven. I have never undertaken any building work before but wanted to try to do everything myself. We had a pile of stone left from an extension we had done a couple of years ago so it was an ideal opportunity to use them up. I downloaded the plans for the brick built oven from The Stone Bake Oven Company website and these helped me immensely.

The whole build took me three weeks and I can’t believe how much satisfaction I got from it. The girls at The Stone Bake Oven Company were fantastic, they kept me informed of the delivery date and helped with a few other questions I put their way. The oven arrived when expected and the delivery driver was very helpful. I managed to get some help from family members to lift the oven into place and it fitted together perfectly.

The first night we lit the oven, we had some friends around and the pizzas were out of this world. We have since used the oven for cooking fish and even a full roast dinner including fantastic Yorkshire puddings. I honestly can’t believe how versatile the oven is and how much of a focal point it has become. All our friends think it’s great and I think it’s only a matter of time before they invest themselves.

We are still very happy with our oven, it is up there with the best purchases we have ever made and we can’t wait for the first warm evening to arrive. Thank you so much!!”
